New road linking the back of the campus

The project include widening of the road near to the water tank which then link to the back of new ICTC building, pass the PAPHRSB Institute of Health Science and straight on to the entrance road to the neighbouring Institute Teknologi Brunei. Construction work in progress.

Latest update on road - due to weak soil conditions behind the ICTC building, part of the road will not be constructed.

Drama Production at the Lecture Theatre

All I can say it was very entertaining! The lighting crew used innovative ways to create the right ambiance to the stage. One of the 6 new projects rolled out under the 2007-2012 National Development Plan is the Construction of a Lecture Theatre Complex and a Performance Hall.

Proceeds from the sale of tickets were donated to SMARTER Brunei. Congratulations to the crew and cast of Two Sides of a Coin!

Ground breaking ceremony for Student Centre Extension

The ground breaking ceremony for the new student centre was held on 10th November 2010. The construction of the new extension started on 17th July 2010. The expected date of completion is 16th September 2011 with a contruction period of 14 months. The projects cost just over BND2 million and is located next to the existing student centre. This is one of six projects to be rolled out under the 2007-2012 National Development Plan.

The guest of honour for the event was the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Associate Profesor Dr Zohrah Hj Sulaiman.

Handover of the New Residential College

New ICTC Building Site Meeting

Current physical progress 66.6%

The first site meeting for 2010 was held today at the Site Office with a brand new project architect in charge. The meeting as usual was attended by all consultants, suppliers, main contractor and us (Estate Office).

External works: Drainage 95% completed, walkway hand railing completed and walkway roof sheet installation in progress

Internal building work: Completed are all the truss work, door frame fixings and railing work. In progress are tile work, wall partition, ceiling work, internal plumbing work.

Special thanks to the building material suppliers for their support and cooperation.

Transportation to and from the site courtesy of the new vintage 4WD of the Estate Office. And to end the post, enjoy the pictures showing the view from the new building - the blue sea can be seen even from the first floor.

Institute of Medicine - End of Defects Liability Inspection

The inspection was held on the 8th December 2009 and concentrated mainly on the defects liability period for building and mechanical and electrical (M&E) works.

Fire Safety Audit in progress

The fire safety audit is conducted by the Fire and Rescue Department, Ministry of Home Affairs. The audit will cover all aspects of fire safety from fire safety devices to escape routes throughout the campus. This exercise is part of the Estate Office's initiative to ensure a safe working and learning environment for all. The audit started with the Chancellor Hall and will end at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre.

PROMEEC Energy Management Site Visit - The Chiller and Boiler Tour

As one of the case study for the PROMEEC Energy Management Programme, the Estate office was recently host to a group of Energy Management specialists who were here in Brunei to conduct an Energy Management Workshop. The group consisted of the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE), Energy Conservation Center Japan (ECCJ) and representatives from Energy Division, Prime Minister's Office.

The site visit started of with a short and sweet presentation by the Mechanical and Electrical Section, Estate Office. The visit was also attended by Estate Office personnel, Dean of Science and a student from the Master in Environmental Management.

After the presentation, the group strolled down to the first location, the Chiller Yard.

The second location is the Female Residential College, where the group had a close look at the boilers currently installed. The hot water from the boilers are used primarily for the showers.

The third and last location visited by the group was the Chancellor Hall stand alone chiller system. Chancellor Hall being newer than the rest of the campus is not linked to the Chiller Yard but has its own system. The same goes for the UBD Mosque, Institute of Medicine and the ILIA Building.

After the hour long walk in the sunshine, the visiting group concluded their findings and made their recommendations.

Some of the recommendations and findings:

Chiller yard water pump temperature is smooth at 4.7 degrees Fahrenheit ~ possibility of reducing the flow rate of pumps
To insulate the piping supplying hot water from the boilers ~ maintain temperature
To turn of most of the exhaust fan during low occupancy time since carbon dioxide levels will be low (less people) and extensive air interchange is not required.
To explore the possibility of replacing exhaust fan with an exhaust fan that has a heating unit for better and efficient air interchange.
To consider replacing the 15 year old chillers. Currently, the efficiency is less than 100%.
Power factor - 0.9 (acceptable)

Next in the pipeline for the Estate Office ~ to work closely with Faculty of Science and the Energy Division, Prime Minister's Office on Energy Management issues. Reducing energy usage is a priority.

The Green Project

The Estate Office in its drive to be sustainable is involved in a myriad of green activities, one of them is the Green Project. The Green Project is launched during the start of the Convocation Fest 2009 and its main objective is to increase awareness amongst the campus community on environmental, sustainable and green issues. Some of the activities under the Green Project umbrella are the Amazing Race, creation of Bike Parks and Ride-a-Bike at campus drive, Less Plastic campaign and many more. One of the projects that the Estate Office is involved in is the Green Project Workshop on Forest Rehabilitation together with the Plant-a-tree cause.

The ILIA Building

It has been 5 months and the new ILIA Building (previously known as the Yellow Building or the CIBFM Building) is buzzing with activities. The building is located just near the main entrance into the campus - it will be the first thing you see as you enter the campus grounds. The building is home to the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), Strategic Quality Assurance and Management Unit (SQAMU), Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) and Postgraduate Studies and Research Office (PSR). We do love acronyms!

The Central Lecture Theater (CLT) at the heart of the campus

Located strategically in the midst of all the faculties is the two storey Central Lecture Theater. There are altogether 17 lecture rooms of various sizes and 3 lecture theaters.

large one with a capacity of approximately 140.

Once upon a time last year, the BAG Network staff gain knowledge on compost, the hows, whats, when and which from Dr Irene Cheong, the university's environmentalist and leading member of UBD sustainability group. As a token of appreciation, the BAG Network pledge to plant 100 trees at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The planting activity started fittingly during the world environment day in June 2009 with the last and 100th tree planted during His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei 63rd Birthday on 15th July 2009.

Thank you also to the Forestry Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources for donating the seedlings!

On campus accommodation

On campus accommodation at Universiti Brunei Darussalam is located just 4 minutes away, by foot from the faculty buildings. The pictures below feature the Female Residential College. In total, there is approximately 700 space for rent to students in both Female and Male Residential College. In my earlier posts, I have featured the currently under construction Residential College.

The rooms are highly popular amongst the UBD students.

The Female Residential College has 6 blocks
and Male Residential College has 4 blocks.

View from the back. Due to the the campus's close proximity to the South China Sea, the inhabitants of the Residential College experience fresh sea breeze nearly all day..

A typical block is a 2 storey block, with the common
facilties such as kitchen and bathrooms in the middle.

A typical kitchen. One for each floor. The Residential Colleges is a
catered facility, although some students do opt to self cater. The eatery is
located within the central area.

From tomorrow, Monday, 6th July 2009, everyone entering the university campus will have their temperature screened. This is part of the University's preparedness plan in the face of the rising H1N1 cases in Brunei Darussalam.

5 screening points will be in operation:

Chancellor Hall - At the lobby
Administration Building - At the foyer
Central Lecture Theaters - At the foyer (ground floor)
Institute of Medicine - At the main entrance
Library - At the main entrance

The number of screening points will be adjusted according to needs ~ We are currently on a long break and the new semester will start on 25th July 2009.

As part of the standard operating procedure, those with temperature above 38 degree Celsius or exhibiting any of the H1N1 symptoms (runny nose, cough, sore throat, difficulty in breathing, joint pains, headache, dizziness, diarrhea or vomiting) will be given a face mask and advised to go to the nearest health centre immediately.

Super Accomodation at the Visiting Lecturers Quarters

The Visiting Lecturers' Quarters is situated within the Male Residential Colleges and features 20 well presented guests rooms. All guest rooms ranging from junior suite to deluxe twin are equipped with coffee-tea making facilities, in-room entertainment system, free daily newspaper, outlet adapters and wireless high speed internet access.

Guests have the choice of dining out (nearest would be the many eateries around campus) or in. The Quarters is equipped with a kitchen complete with cutlery and other utensils, enough equipment for a small home cooked meal. Very useful for our long term guests.

In the midst of all the pursuit for knowledge and learning, hustle and bustle of academics... lies the University Mosque ~ a serene presence exuding the aura of calm and peace. The Mosque is located just in front of the Male Residential College and next to the Faculty of Science. The Mosque serves the University community as well as the neighbouring villages.

The Minaret can be seen in the background. The way the campus was designed, the Minaret which lies on the central axis can be seen from almost anywhere in UBD

University Mosque by His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei
on Friday, 15 September 1995.

Autumn in UBD after Forest Fire

A major forest fire occurred last Sunday, 14th June 2009. The fire wiped out a substantial amount of forest, approximately 80 hectares (my estimation) mostly around the back of the main Institute of Medicine (IM) new building area all the way to Institute Teknologi Brunei (ITB), our neighbour.

The fire burned all the forest between ITB and UBD... This picture is taken
from ITB side - UBD can now be viewed from ITB.

Contruction workers for the new ICTC building repairing their electrical and telephone line. 50 meters of their water line was also destroyed. The workers also assisted the Fire and Rescue team during the blaze.

The Artistic and Cultured Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS)

The Faculty of Arts and Social Science is located between the Business Faculty (FBEPS) and the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). Personally, I think it is one of the nicest faculty building in university ~ it has the widest corridors, it has the widest walkways, it is sun friendly, staff rooms are big and spacious and finally, it is in good condition for a 14 year old building, it exudes a peaceful and serene vibe... Visitors to the university always remark how like a holiday resort the university is... in FASS you can almost believe it.

The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre (KBFSC)

KBFSC, a gem and the only field studies centre in Brunei Darussalam is located in the Temburong district, deep within the lush, most preserved rainforest of Borneo. The centre serves the research community focusing on flora and fauna of Brunei Darussalam. The forest is so luscious, you can't see KBFSC via Google Earth.

How to get to KBFSC?
1. Hop on a boat at Kianggeh Jetty, Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, the town capital of Temburong. The earliest boat leaves at 0730hrs - the boat service to the district is very regular, since the most convienient way to reach Temburong is by boat only. Cost less than B$10. Journey takes 45 minutes.
[To go via land, you will need a passport since you need to enter Malaysia before you get there]

2. When you reach Bangar, get yourself to Batang Duri Jetty. You either get help from the locals on how to get to Batang Duri or have something pre-arranged (Recommended).

3. Hop on a temuai, a type of boat used by locals to navigate along the rivers of Temburong. You need a special skill to drive the boat, especially when the water is low. The temuai service can be provided by KBFSC. The journey on the temuai takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on reiver condition.

4. Arrive at KBFSC.

The B0rneo Bulletin Sunday Focus

And.. The Brunei Times, Sunday Edition.

The Universiti Brunei Darussalam yesterday (06.06.09) inked and signed the agreement for the appointment of consultants for 4 buiding projects ~ The Faculty of Science Building Extension, Institute of Medicine Building Extension, Student Affairs Section Building Extension and the Library Building Extension, altogether totalling B$56 million. All the buildings are due for completion in 2011. Although not signing agreements, the Public Works Department, Ministry of Development who is the Architect and Lead Consultant for the Sports Complex Extension also participated in the exhibition.

Other projects in the pipeline, also due for completion in 2011, is the Lecture and Performance Theatre Complex and the Building Extension for Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education. All the new projects are part of the Brunei National Development Plan 2007 - 2011.

The Information, Communication and Technology Centre (ICTC)

The ICTC is located within the Academic Services Building which also house the Library and the Educational Technology Centre. By 2010, with the completion of the new Academic Services Building, the space currently occupied by ICTC will be converted to Library space.

The Swanky New CIBFM Building (or affectionately named the YELLOW building by UBDians)

This building is one of the latest new buildings of UBD. By August 2009, it will be the new home for the newly established Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement and other offices of UBD. UBD will be occupying a major part of the ground floor and the whole of second floor. The other areas will be occupied by an external body, Centre for Islamic Banking and Finance (CIBFM). A first for the university in terms of space sharing with an external body. The building is located on the right just as you go into the UBD main entrance before the first roundabout. It has its back to the main road and its front faces the Chancellor Hall.

Where we nurture our greens...

The nursery is located in a small corner just next to the university's sports complex and the main storage building. The area is naturally shady due to the presence of big tress and this helps protect the young plants. Since the university have a separate landscaping contract for maintenance of its grounds, the nursery supplies plants mainly for indoor areas and as added decor for UBD functions. The university directly employ 4 staff to maintain the nursery and all the indoor plants within campus.

The Chancellor Hall is located just next to the Administration Building. The main feature is a big hall of capacity approx. 3000 people. The hall is a new addition to the campus and was completed sometime in 2003. It is used to host the university's special events such as the convocation, conferences, seminars, forums... the list goes on.. but is also open for rental to the public.

Today we received the second container of furniture for the IM building. Two more containers will arrive tomorrow. I was informed that everyone from the supplier's company will be working extra hours in the next few days installing and fixing the furniture. Very efficient! The dateline for moving into the new building is less than 2 weeks away.

Latest progress on the new Residential Colleges, UBD

Target date for completion: April 2010.

The new Residential Colleges is located just near to the entrance to Institute Teknologi Brunei. It consists of 4 blocks, 2 for the gents and 2 for the ladies. Each block 6 floors, with 22 apartments, each with 5 rooms = 110 occupants per block. All the rooms are air-conditioned fitted with a single bed, closet and a study table. Each apartment have its own kitchen, laundry area, living room, ablution area and bathroom.

Current progress: They have installed the lifts in 2 of the blocks, have started to put on the tiles to the rooms and the circulation area.

UBD will be developing the space in front of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science Building and the University Library into an open concept self-study discussion area. The proposed structure should be modern and fresh, innovative, natural and environmentally friendly with provisions made for an outdoor cafe/sandwich bar.

The Estate Office is inviting any interested UBD student or alumni to contribute their ideas, design or otherwise.

Will be posting up pictures of the areas later tonight, with more details on how to participate. But if you simply can't wait, further details can be obtained from the Estate Office, UBD.
